Kitchens

"Too many cooks spoil the broth."

Although the old adage may lack relevance today, any kitchen remodel should certainly take into account the number of "cooks", guests and functions that a kitchen must accommodate.

First Steps
Kim Stevermer suggests that the first step to kitchen remodel is to dream. Creating a "kitchen file" to house ideas, pictures, color swatches, and favorite designs provides a starting place for a kitchen plan.

"This is the dream phase. Don't be concerned with the cost - try to identify what kind of look you like," Stevermer advises. "Conceptualize movement in the kitchen - what type of activities will take place, how many people will congregate on a regular basis. Will there be more than one cook? What are the ages of the primary kitchen users? Think about how the space must work for you."

Once the kitchen file is ready, it is time to call a design/build firm like Stevermer Company.

It's important to remember that although the cost of a quality kitchen remodeling project may be largely recovered when the house is sold, the prevailing home values in a neighborhood should also be considered. In a neighborhood of $200,000 homes, the cost of a $100,000 remodel will take longer to recover.

Universal Design
For more mature homeowners or homeowners with disabilities, incorporating universal design features such as wider doorways, varying counter top heights, multiple lighting options and wheelchair accessible spaces may be appropriate.
